What Can Cause a Road Traffic Accident?

As is common knowledge, a road traffic accident can have dire consequences for those involved.

In a report from the PSNI in 2018, there were 5,749 recorded injury collisions in Northern Ireland – many of which could have been avoided with greater caution and consideration for other drivers. In this post, M.I.S. Claims gives the most common causes of road traffic accidents to help you avoid collisions whilst behind the wheel

Distracted driving

Inattention or diverted attention whilst driving is the most common cause of a road traffic accident. There were 962 reported collisions as a result of driver distraction in 2018. Typical distractions whilst driving include talking on a mobile phone, sending text messages or eating and drinking behind the wheel.

Number two on the list of road traffic accident causes is tailgating or driving too close to cars in front. The danger of tailgating is that it leaves drivers with less of a chance to manoeuvre if the car in front should break suddenly to avoid pedestrians, animals and so on. Last year, there were 788 collisions recorded as a result of tailgating – a number which could be significantly reduced by leaving adequate stopping distance between travelling vehicles.

Reckless driving

There are many factors which contribute to reckless driving, including emerging from minor roads without care, turning right without care, driving in the wrong position and driving at excessive speeds. Remember, erratic driving puts both your life and the lives of others in danger, so precautions must be taken.

Driving under the influence

Drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol contributed to 276 road traffic accidents last year. Substances affect drivers’ normal bodily functions which are crucial to coping with the demands of the road. You should always use designated drivers, public transport or walking as a means to mitigate the risk of driving whilst under the influence. It’s never ok to drink or take drugs and drive.

‘Just a wee Cycle’

“Just a wee cycle!” On 26th May, five of our fittest took on the challenge of our Cycle of Hope, cycling 400 miles (Whitehead – Cork) across Ireland.

This proved to be no easy feat, especially with the start of the warm summer weather we all loved! We are incredibly proud of every person who completed the cycle; your mental and physical strength is most admirable.

Below are some pics of the cyclists’ send off which included the very special moment that one of our directors, Jonathan Ogilby rose the flag of Hope which was then carried the whole way to Cork in honour of every single person who has fought a battle with Cancer.

This is not a sentiment we hold lightly, the opportunity to support @Hope House Ireland@Hope House as they support those in the midst of their battle is one which we value highly.

‘In Their Shoes’ Charity Lunch

Perhaps our most stylish fundraising event was our ‘In Their Shoes’ charity lunch hosted by Alan Baillie on 23rd February 2018 at the Culloden Estate. At the event guests enjoyed entertainment from James Nesbitt, Peter Corry, Adger Brown, Fiddler Adam, Smokin’ Pipes and Slide Step.We are so very grateful for those who contributed to this event by giving of their time & talent as well as donating money and/or fabulous auction prizes. The generosity and kindness in support of the event was overwhelming and enabled us to support Hope House with great success, and in great style!

MIS Claims celebrates 25 years in Business

Motorist Insurance Services Ltd (MIS Claims) was founded in 1993 by Alan Baillie to deliver an accident management process to the Irish Motorist, centred on expert local knowledge and a dedicated claims handling service. Sadly, Alan passed away earlier this year following a year-long battle with cancer.

Now trading for 25 years, MIS is the largest independent claims management company in Ireland providing motor intermediaries, insurers and out clients with ”peace of mind motoring” which also includes a breakdown Recovery service. Last year, we rescued 23,000 motorists throughout Ireland.

In 2005, we purchased our first 10 private cars for the purpose of providing temporary hire cars to clients involved in no blame car accidents. Within 5 years we found ourselves with a fleet of 240 cars, vans and private hire taxis.

2008 saw us diversify into selling insurance products such as Household and Travel Insurance, GAP and Warranty insurances via a broker network of approximately 150 outlets throughout Ireland. With over 50,000 live policies, this has become an integral part our business.

MIS prides itself on a strong standing relationship with the insurance community. Key partnerships are held with AIG Ireland, AXA, Caulfield Insurance, Dickson & Co., Hughes Insurance, Kerr Group to name but a few.

We would like to thank all of our business partners over the past 25 years. There have been many challenges along the way, however we have evolved, developed and weathered the storm and continue to grow year on year.

Senior management would also like to acknowledge our wonderful staff, the majority of whom have been with us between 10 and 20 years, for their hard work, dedication and loyalty. We our proud of the high standard of service they enable us to provide to the local community.
